Five Types of Abuse

5 Types of Abuse

Physical
Physical abuse is the most obvious type of abuse.  Types of physical abuse are hitting, punching, slapping, biting, or any other action that causes physical harm.  If you see someone with cuts, bruises, scars, you might want to have a discussion with them about it.

Mental
Mental abuse occurs when one person is constantly putting down the other person in a relationship.  They may call their partner names, make threats, or make accusations of cheating against the victim.  These actions are harmful to the mind and as such, makes this relationship unhealthy.  A few examples of mental abuse:  "I will leave."   "I will kill myself."  "You are ugly."  "You are stupid."

Emotional
The abusive partner may try to control the other person's behavior, personality, and life.  The abusive person is trying to crush the spirit of their dating partner.  Examples of this are:  "You can't be friends with him/her anymore."  "You will only wear clothes I approve of."

Sexual
Being touched in a way you do not wish to be is one form of sexual abuse.  Sexual abuse is also when one partner puts pressure on the other to have sex, or even rape.  This is called date rape.

Financial
As you would guess, abuse can also be financial, having to do with money.  If a dating partner is using the other partner's credit card without permission, putting their paycheck into their own account, or telling their partner what they can and cannot spend their money on, this is financial abuse.  Often times, a victim feels that they cannot get out of a relationship of this type because they don't have any money to make their escape.
